To multi-plex or not to multi-plex...that is the question

Since building the "Franken-shield" experimentation has been much easier (could do with some more break-out headers, maybe later), less wirey ;).

I have been investigating the best way to control the strips of LED lights and have decided on transistors rather than relays.  They are much cheaper, more than capable for the current/voltages being used and fast!

I have previously built a multi-plexed LED board, so the question now is are the LED strips up to being multi-plexed or do I have to drive them individually ?  I have a range of transistors to play with, but my current favourite is a Darlington array, 7 transistors per chip.  So that would enable me to drive either 14 individually or 49 multi-plexed per light module.
