INSPIRE Data Viewer

For work-related reasons I have recently become interested in the EU INSPIRE programme (http://inspire.ec.europa.eu/).   The purpose of INSPIRE is to create a European Union spatial data infrastructure for the purposes of EU environmental policies and policies or activities which may have an impact on the environment.  Basically this means that any government organisation that holds geospatial information related to the environment has to make it available.

So I began my search for GOV.UK INSPIRE datasets. My search began on https://data.gov.uk/.  I quickly found out that lots of datasets are available, but there is no simple way to aggregate them onto a single map....

So my next weekend project  http://inspire.digidad.space.  In allows the user to overlay a selection of INSPIRE layers onto a map of the UK.

The project is written in NodeJS and the code is available on GitHub (https://github.com/gpimblott/inspire-viewer).  Tech used:

  • Bootstrap for layout
  • Handlebars templates
  • http://locationiq.org/ for geocoding
  • MapBox for fancy maps
  • OpenStreetMap for basic maps
and that's it !
